The tuatara.

Close to dinosaurs not lizards. Unique animal. Nocturnal.


Size, shape, colour, special features.

Holes in it’s skull. Born with 3rd eye. Tuatara means Spikes on its back. Male bigger than females. Spikes are soft and flexible.

Around for 225 million years. Used to be found all over nz. Only found new on island’s. Lives near the coast. Auckland zoo has tuatara enclosure.

Comes out at night,sleeps all day. Sits and waits for prey. It eats crickets, weta, spiders. They can live for 100-150 years. Thay eat more in the summer than winter. Thay bury their eggs.
